# Records overview

> What Records are in Connie — objects, lists, folders and the record side panel — and how to find your way around.

**Records** is where Connie keeps your data: the people you sell to, their companies, your deals and your tasks. Everything you find with the Lead Finder, import from a CSV or sync from your CRM (HubSpot, Attio, folk…) lands here, and your workflows, agents and Chat read from and write to it.

**Where:** left sidebar → **Records** · `https://connie.ai/<workspace-id>/records`

New to workspace links? See [Navigating Connie](/navigating-connie).

## The three building blocks

Think of Records like a set of shared spreadsheets that all know about each other.

| Building block | What it is | Everyday example |
| - | - | - |
| **Object** | A *type* of record, with its own fields (columns). | "People" is an object. Every person has an Email, Phone, Company, Stage… |
| **List** | A named group of records from one object. A record can be in many lists. | "Q4 London prospects" is a list of People. |
| **Folder** | A container that groups lists. Folders are one level deep (no folders inside folders). | A "Campaigns" folder holding three prospect lists. |

A **record** is one row — one person, one company, one deal or one task. A **field** (also called a property or column) is one piece of information about it, such as Email.

Connie comes with four built-in objects: **People**, **Companies**, **Deals** and **Tasks**. You can also create your own custom objects. See [Objects and fields](/records/objects-and-fields).

<Note>
  Lists don't copy records. If the same person is in three lists, it's still one record — edit it anywhere and every list shows the change. Removing someone from a list doesn't delete them.
</Note>

## The Records page

The Records page lists every list and folder you can see.

* **Header:** **Records** with the number of lists, plus the **Templates** and **New** buttons.
* **Lead Finder cards:** **Find people** ("Find your ideal customers from over 600m available contacts"), **Find companies** ("Find your ideal accounts from over 600m available companies") and **Find jobs** ("Build a live TAM from hiring intent, millions of job postings"). See [Lead Finder](/records/lead-finder).
* **Object tabs:** **All**, **People**, **Companies**, **Deals**, **Tasks**, then any custom objects. Pick one to see only that object's lists.
* **Search lists...** finds lists by *name*. It doesn't search inside lists — open a list and use its search to find a person.
* **Filters** narrows the directory by Name, Record count, Last updated, Created at, Created by, Shared with or Object.
* **Table columns:** **List**, **Records** (how many records it holds), **Shared with**, **Created by** and **Last updated**.

Folders appear first, then the four default lists (People, Companies, Deals, Tasks — marked **Default** in Created by), then starred lists, then everything else, newest activity first.

The left sidebar also shows an **Objects** section with a shortcut to every shared object. Clicking one opens all records of that object, at `https://connie.ai/<workspace-id>/records/objects/<object-id>`.

<Tip>
  Shortcuts for the built-in objects: `https://connie.ai/<workspace-id>/records/people`, `/records/companies`, `/records/deals` and `/records/tasks` each open that object's default list.
</Tip>

If your workspace has no lists yet, the page shows **What do you want to build?** with an **Ask anything...** box and a **Create records** button. Typing there opens [Chat](/chat/overview), where Connie can build the list for you.

## Open a list

<Steps>
  <Step title="Go to Records">
    Click **Records** in the left sidebar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click a list name">
    The list opens as a spreadsheet-style grid at `https://connie.ai/<workspace-id>/records/<list-id>`. The breadcrumb at the top shows **Records** › folder (if any) › list name and the record count.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Work in the grid">
    Use **Actions** to add records, import, export, find leads or add columns. Use the toolbar to search, filter, sort and switch views. See [Lists and views](/records/lists-and-views).
  </Step>
</Steps>

At the top right of every list you'll find **Ask Connie** (opens Connie beside the list so you can ask questions or make changes in plain English), **Share** and **Actions**.

## Open a record (side panel)

<Steps>
  <Step title="Click a row">
    The record opens in a side panel. The address bar gains `?row=<record-id>`, so you can copy the URL to send a teammate straight to that record.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Use the tabs">
    * **Record** — all fields, related records (for example a person's company and deals), and cards for tasks, deals and calls.
    * **Activity** — the activity feed for this record.
    * **Notes** — a rich-text notes editor.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Use the record menu (⋯)">
    Options include **Copy link**, **Add to workflow** (People and Companies), **Send message** (opens the [Inbox](/inbox/overview) for this contact), **Create a task**, and **Delete** (Deals and Tasks only).
  </Step>
</Steps>

Custom-object records open a simpler panel listing every field, with a **Search record values** box.

## Sample records

New workspaces start with sample people, companies, deals and tasks so you can explore. Their names end in **(Sample)**. The first time you open People, Companies or Deals you'll see a **Sample people** (or companies/deals) dialog with **Keep samples** and **Remove samples**. "Removing samples won't delete your own records."

Changed your mind later? Open the list → **Actions** → **Remove sample records**.

## Good to know

* **Who sees which lists:** workspace owners and admins see every list. Other members see lists they created, lists shared with the whole workspace, and lists shared with them. See [Lists and views](/records/lists-and-views#share-a-list).
* **Credits:** browsing, filtering and editing records is free. Lead Finder imports beyond the free allowance, enrichment and AI columns use credits. See [Credits](/billing/credits).
* **Per-record spend:** owners and admins see a badge in the side panel, "This row has cost N credits".
* **Calls** are kept in the [Inbox](/inbox/overview), not in Records.
* The old "CRM" area is now Records. Old `…/crm/people`, `…/crm/companies`, `…/crm/deals` and `…/crm/tasks` links redirect automatically.

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I searched for a person on the Records page and found nothing">
    **Why:** the search box on the Records page (**Search lists...**) only matches list names. **Fix:** open the list (for example **People**) and use the search icon in the list toolbar.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A record link says it belongs to a different workspace or is unavailable">
    **Why:** the link is for another workspace, or you don't have access to that list. You may see "This result belongs to a different workspace." or "This record result is unavailable or you no longer have access." **Fix:** switch to the right workspace, or ask the list owner to share the list with you.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Records took too long to load. Please try again.">
    **Why:** the page timed out. **Fix:** click **Try again** or reload the page.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Counts are shimmering on a brand-new workspace">
    **Why:** Connie is still adding the sample records. **Fix:** wait a few seconds.
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>
