# Connect Connie to VS Code

> Add Connie to VS Code so GitHub Copilot's agent mode can work in your Connie workspace.

Add Connie to VS Code so GitHub Copilot can use it in agent mode. You need VS Code ([code.visualstudio.com](https://code.visualstudio.com)) with GitHub Copilot signed in.

**Where in Connie:** click your name at the bottom of the left sidebar → **Connect my agent** → **VS Code** · `https://connie.ai/<workspace-id>/connect-agent/vscode`

## Connect Connie

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Command Palette">
    Press Cmd+Shift+P (Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows), type `MCP` and choose **MCP: Add Server**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose HTTP">
    Choose **HTTP (HTTP or Server-Sent Events)** as the server type.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Paste Connie's URL">
    Paste `https://mcp.connie.ai` and press Enter. Type `connie` as the server ID, then choose **Global** so Connie works in every project. (Newer VS Code versions may call this **Copilot Global**.)
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in">
    VS Code asks to sign in to mcp.connie.ai. Click **Allow**. When it asks "Do you want Code to open the external website?", click **Open**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Allow access in Connie">
    Sign in to Connie if you're asked. Choose your **Default workspace**, click **Allow access** and go back to VS Code.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Use Connie in Copilot Chat">
    Open Chat (Ctrl+Cmd+I on Mac, Ctrl+Alt+I on Windows) and choose **Agent** at the bottom of the chat box. Ask something like: "Find 10 VPs or Heads of Sales at US B2B SaaS companies with 50–500 employees, and go ahead and save them to a new list in Connie." If VS Code asks before running a Connie tool, choose **Always Allow Tools from connie**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Connect with mcp.json

Run **MCP: Open User Configuration** for all your projects, or create `.vscode/mcp.json` in one project, and add:

```json mcp.json theme={null}
{
  "servers": {
    "connie": { "type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.connie.ai" }
  }
}
```

<Warning>
  VS Code's own `mcp.json` (user configuration or `.vscode/mcp.json`) uses `servers` as the top-level key, not `mcpServers` like other apps. It also needs `"type": "http"`. Newer VS Code versions can also save to shared files (`.mcp.json` in the project, or `~/.copilot/mcp-config.json`); those use `mcpServers` instead.
</Warning>

## Good to know

* **No API key needed.** VS Code signs in with OAuth. Don't add `mcp-remote` or a local command.
* **Use Agent mode** in Copilot Chat. That's where VS Code makes MCP tools such as Connie's available.
* **Which workspace:** the **Default workspace** you chose, unless you name another in your request. See [Manage access](/mcp/manage-access).
* **Credits:** actions use your Connie workspace's credits. See [Credits](/billing/credits).

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="No sign-in prompt appeared">
    **Fix:** press Cmd+Shift+P (Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows), run **MCP: List Servers**, select **connie** and choose **Start Server**. Or click the Accounts icon at the bottom left of VS Code and choose the sign-in for connie.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="VS Code doesn't see Connie from my mcp.json">
    **Why:** VS Code's own `mcp.json` uses `mcpServers` instead of `servers`, or `"type": "http"` is missing. **Fix:** copy the example above, save, and start the server from **MCP: List Servers**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Copilot doesn't use Connie">
    **Fix:** switch the chat to **Agent**. Check that Connie's tools are turned on in the chat's tools picker.
  </Accordion>
