# Calls and the dialer

> Buy a phone number, turn a list of people into a calling session, and let Connie dial them one by one while you talk.

The dialer is a **power dialer**: you pick a list of people, and Connie calls them one at a time from your browser. When someone picks up, you're connected and you talk to them yourself, with your script on screen. When a call goes to voicemail, Connie can leave a message for you automatically, either a recording of your voice or a message read by an AI voice. Connie doesn't hold the conversation for you.

After each answered call, Connie adds the transcript, a summary, insights and suggested follow-up actions, just like a [recorded meeting](/inbox/meetings).

**Where:** left sidebar → **Inbox** → **Calls** · `https://connie.ai/<workspace-id>/inbox?filter=calls`

<Note>
  In the Inbox, **Calls** means phone calls from the dialer. Video meetings are under **Meetings**. A list of people to call is called a **calling sequence**, **dialing session** or **dialer session** in different places in the app; they're all the same thing.
</Note>

## Before you start

* A **phone number** bought in Connie. Calls are made from it, and it's the caller ID people see.
* A **list** of people with phone numbers in [Records](/records/lists-and-views), or people you find or import while creating the session.
* A computer with a **microphone** and a browser that's allowed to use it. Calls run in your browser; there's no app to install.
* Enough **credits** for the number and for processing calls. See [Costs](#costs).

## Buy a phone number

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Buy numbers">
    Go to **Inbox → Calls** and click **Buy phone number**. You can also hover **Calls** in the left column, click **⋯** and choose **Buy phone number**, or go to left sidebar → **Tools** → **Add** → **Phone number**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Search for a number">
    Choose a **Country** (about 120 are available; the default is the US), the **Features** you need (SMS, MMS, Voice, Fax, Emergency), and the **Type** (Local, Toll-free, Mobile, National, Shared cost). To narrow it down, search by **Area code** (for example 415), **Locality** or **Rate center**. **Advance** lets you search for numbers that start with, contain or end with certain digits. Click **Buy phone number** to run the search (it doesn't buy anything until you've picked numbers).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick numbers and check the price">
    Each result shows an **Upfront price** and a **Monthly price**, both in credits. Tick the numbers you want and click the buy button, which shows how many you picked (for example **Buy 1 phone number**).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    The confirmation tells you the upfront cost and the monthly recurring charge in credits. Click **Confirm**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### Manage your numbers

Hover **Calls** in the Inbox's left column → **⋯** → **My phone numbers**. You can:

* **Rename** a number, for example "Sales line".
* **Remove** a number. This stops the monthly charge and releases the number, so someone else can claim it. There's no refund.

## Create a calling sequence

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a session">
    Go to **Inbox → Calls** and click **Create sequence**. (Once you have calls in the list, use the **Add call** icon at the top of the list instead.) The **Start dialing session** window opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose who to call">
    Pick one:

    * **Import from list**: choose one of your [lists](/records/lists-and-views). Leave **Sync new records** on to add people who join the list later to the session automatically. Click **Start session**.
    * **Find people**: search Connie's people database. See [Lead Finder](/records/lead-finder).
    * **Extract from LinkedIn**: import people from LinkedIn.
    * **Import CSV**: upload a CSV file. See [Import and export](/records/import-and-export).

    You'll see "Setting up the session…" while Connie builds it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set up the dialer">
    The session opens as a table, named "Dialer session -" plus your list's name, with the **Dialer settings** panel open. Fill in the settings below.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start calling">
    Click **Start session** and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### Dialer settings

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Number** | The phone number (caller ID) you call from. If you own exactly one number, it's picked for you. Pick several to rotate: each person is called from the next number in turn, and someone you've called before is called from the same number again. |
| **Contact number** | The column that holds each person's phone number. Connie picks a phone column for you; change it if it's wrong. Rows without a valid number are skipped. |
| **Time between calls** | How many seconds to wait before dialing the next person (0 to 3,600). The default is 5. |
| **Automatic voicemail drop** | Leave a message automatically when a call goes to voicemail. See below. |
| **Call twice** | If the first attempt isn't answered, call the same person a second time. |
| **Script** | What you plan to say (up to 4,000 characters). It's shown to you during calls. |

### Voicemail drop

Turn on **Automatic voicemail drop** and choose where the message comes from:

* **Upload an audio**: an MP3 or WAV file, up to 10 MB.
* **Record your audio**: record the message in your browser.
* **Use AI**: pick a **Voice** and write a **Script**. Click **+** in the script box to insert a value from the session's columns, such as the person's first name, so every message is personal. Keep it under 650 characters (about 40 seconds); "Keep it short — long voicemails get cut off."

When a call reaches voicemail, Connie leaves the message and moves on to the next person.

## Make calls

Once you click **Start session**, Connie works down the table from the top, one call at a time. It skips people who've already been called and numbers that aren't valid.

Each row's call shows its progress: **Connecting…**, **Ringing…**, **Live** (with a timer), then **Voicemail**, **Wrong number** or **Processing…**, and finally a sentiment chip (**Positive**, **Neutral** or **Negative**).

While you're on a call, a call bar floats on the screen:

* **Mute** and **End call**.
* **Show script** / **Hide script**.
* **End session** to stop dialing.
* Between calls: **Call again** to redial the last person, and a countdown, "Next call in" followed by the seconds. Click the countdown to pause (**Paused**), then **Resume calling** to continue.

<Note>
  **Email** and **Book meeting** in the call bar aren't available yet.
</Note>

## See your call results

**In the session:** open the **Calls** tab. It lists every attempt with Name, Phone number, Date, Host and **Outcome** (Completed, Dialing, Live, Voicemail, Failed or Invalid number). The header shows how many people you've called out of the total, for example "12 of 40 people called". Click a row to see the details: who was called, from which number, duration, start, answer and end times, why the call ended, the voicemail that was left, and the **Transcript**. Click **View full call analysis** for the summary, insights and action items.

**In the Inbox:** answered calls also appear in **Inbox → Calls**. Calls that weren't answered or went to voicemail only appear in the session's **Calls** tab.

**Action items** from a call work exactly like those from a meeting: review them, edit them, and click **Approve**. See [Approve action items](/inbox/meetings#approve-action-items).

**Going back to a session:** after you create a session, Connie opens it at its own page (`https://connie.ai/<workspace-id>/dial-sessions/...`). While you're in a session, the left sidebar lists all your **Dialer sessions**, so you can switch between them. Bookmark a session's page to get back to it quickly.

<Note>
  Dialer calls are transcribed while they happen, but the audio isn't recorded. Only the transcript is kept.
</Note>

## Costs

All costs are in [credits](/billing/credits).

| What | Cost |
| - | - |
| Buying a phone number | The **Upfront price** plus the first month, as shown before you confirm. Prices vary by country and number type. |
| Keeping a phone number | The **Monthly price**, charged every month. |
| Each answered call | **1 credit** for the transcript, summary, insights and action items. If you're out of credits, the call isn't processed. |
| Unanswered calls and voicemails | No processing charge. |
| Talk time and voicemail drops (including AI-voice messages) | No separate charge. |
| Approving a **Send email** action item | 1 credit. Other action items are free. |

**If you run low on credits at renewal:** you'll get "Phone number couldn't be renewed" with the date you need to add credits by. You have 7 days. After that the number is cancelled ("Phone number cancelled"), and sessions can no longer call from it. To avoid this, keep credits topped up or turn on [auto top-up](/billing/top-ups).

## Calling laws and consent

<Warning>
  You're responsible for following the calling and privacy laws that apply to you and to the people you call (for example TCPA rules in the US, and GDPR and local rules in the EU and UK). Connie doesn't check do-not-call lists, doesn't limit the hours you can call, doesn't collect consent, and doesn't announce to the other person that the call is being transcribed. Where the law requires it, tell people at the start of the call.
</Warning>

## Good to know

* **Who can use the dialer:** workspace owners, admins and members can buy numbers and create and run sessions. Guests can't.
* **Plans:** the dialer is available on every plan; you pay for numbers and calls in credits.
* **One call at a time.** Connie never dials several people at once.
* **Limits:**
  * Up to 100 caller numbers per session.
  * Each call can last up to 30 minutes.
  * Ringing stops after about 45 seconds if nobody answers.
  * Phone numbers shorter than 7 digits are skipped.
* **Not available:** using a phone number you already own, verifying an existing caller ID, and audio recordings of calls.
* **Countries:** number availability depends on the country; numbers in India aren't offered.

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Microphone is blocked">
    **Why:** your browser isn't allowing Connie to use the microphone. **Fix:** click the microphone or lock icon in the address bar, allow microphone access for this site, reload the page and try again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Pick a caller number in the Number field first.">
    **Why:** no phone number is selected for the session. **Fix:** open **Dialer settings** and choose a number under **Number**. If you don't have one, click **+ Buy a phone number**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="None of the selected caller numbers is active">
    **Why:** the number you picked is no longer active, for example it was cancelled because it couldn't be renewed. **Fix:** pick another number under **Number**, or buy a new one.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="No phone numbers found to start a session.">
    **Why:** none of the rows has a valid phone number, or **Contact number** points at the wrong column. **Fix:** open **Dialer settings** and choose the right column under **Contact number**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="That number is not in service or reachable / Wrong number">
    **Why:** the person's number isn't valid. **Fix:** correct the number on their record and call again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The call was blocked by the carrier">
    **Why:** the phone network refused the call. The message mentions an account balance, but this refers to Connie's phone service, not to anything you need to manage. **Fix:** try another caller number. If it keeps happening, contact [support](/help/contact-support).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The call was rejected — the number declined it, or the caller ID is not verified.">
    **Why:** the person declined the call, or their network blocked your caller ID. **Fix:** try again later or from another number.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Lost connection to the dialer and could not reconnect.">
    **Why:** a network problem, a VPN, or a browser extension is blocking the connection. **Fix:** check your network, turn off the VPN or blocking extensions, and try again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My calls are missing from Inbox, Calls">
    **Why:** the Inbox only lists calls that someone answered. An answered call is also left out if your workspace had no credits to process it when it ended. **Fix:** open the session's **Calls** tab to see every attempt, including voicemails and failed calls, and keep credits topped up.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My phone number disappeared">
    **Why:** the monthly renewal failed because there weren't enough credits, and the 7-day grace period ended. **Fix:** add credits and buy a new number.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Insufficient credits. This order costs ... credits">
    **Why:** your balance is lower than the price of the numbers you picked. **Fix:** [add credits](/billing/top-ups) and try again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="There are no numbers available in my country">
    **Why:** available numbers vary by country, and some countries aren't offered. **Fix:** try a different number type or search, or contact [support](/help/contact-support).
