# Workflow troubleshooting

> Find the fix for common workflow problems and error messages, from empty variables to workflows that never run.

Look up what you're seeing below. Each row gives the likely cause, the fix, and a link to the full explanation. Error messages are quoted exactly as they appear in Connie.

**Where to start:** most answers are on the workflow's **Runs** tab. Click the failed or odd-looking cell to see its **Input**, **Output** and error. · `https://connie.ai/<workspace-id>/workflows/<workflow-id>?tab=run`

## The workflow doesn't run

| Symptom or message | Why | Fix |
| - | - | - |
| A Schedule, Event or list workflow never runs by itself | It isn't live. Automatic triggers only fire while live. | **Run** → **Set live**. [Set a workflow live](/automations/workflows/test-and-run#set-a-workflow-live) |
| The Automations page shows **Idle** | Idle means draft (not live). | Open it → **Run** → **Set live**. [Statuses](/automations/overview#statuses) |
| **Run** is greyed out: "Please configure the trigger node" | No trigger chosen. | Click the trigger card and choose one. [Triggers](/automations/workflows/triggers) |
| A red **Missing field** pill instead of **Run**; a card says "1 field is required" | A required field is empty. | Click the pill to jump to the step and fill fields marked \*. [Build](/automations/workflows/build#the-canvas) |
| "Complete all required fields to go live" | As above. | As above. |
| Clicking **Set live** opened a **Settings** window | The first Set live needs workflow settings saved. | Pick running hours and click **Done**. [Workflow settings](/automations/workflows/test-and-run#workflow-settings) |
| "Can't set live — reconnect your account first" | A step or trigger uses a disconnected app account. | Click **Reconnect**, then set live again. [Connect accounts](/tools/connect-accounts) |
| "This trigger is bound to a disconnected account. Re-select the account on the trigger node and try again." | The trigger's account was disconnected. | Re-select the account on the trigger, **Save**, set live. |
| "Cannot set live: add at least one action node" | The workflow has only a trigger. | Add a step. [Add a step](/automations/workflows/build#add-a-step) |
| Schedule runs at the wrong hour | The trigger's **Timezone** defaulted to someone's browser. | Set **Timezone** on the Schedule card. [Schedule](/automations/workflows/triggers#schedule) |
| Schedule stops partway through the day | **Maximum runs per day** reached. Extra runs are skipped and not listed. | Raise it. [Schedule](/automations/workflows/triggers#schedule) |
| **Record Created** doesn't fire | It fires only when a record is added to the chosen **List**, while live. | Check the trigger's **List** and filters. [Event](/automations/workflows/triggers#event) |
| Events arrive at night but run in the morning | Running hours with **Queue triggers outside of window** on. | Set **Running hours** to **24/7**. [Workflow settings](/automations/workflows/test-and-run#workflow-settings) |
| Events outside running hours never ran | Queueing is off, so they were dropped. | Turn queueing on or use 24/7. |
| A duplicated workflow doesn't run | Copies start in draft. | Set the copy live. |
| Calendly trigger won't go live | Calendly needs a paid Calendly plan for this. | Upgrade the Calendly account, then set live again. |

## Steps fail or return the wrong data

| Symptom or message | Why | Fix |
| - | - | - |
| `UNFILLED_VARIABLES: The following template variables could not be resolved: …` | A required field uses a variable with no value for this row. | [Why is my variable empty?](/automations/workflows/variables#why-is-my-variable-empty) |
| A variable comes out blank | The value is empty, or the variable is in an optional field and couldn't be found. | [Why is my variable empty?](/automations/workflows/variables#why-is-my-variable-empty) |
| A chip is amber; the card says "1 unresolved variable" | The step or column it pointed at was deleted. | Remove the chip and insert a replacement. [Variables](/automations/workflows/variables#renaming-and-deleting-steps) |
| The variable picker shows no fields under a step | The step hasn't been tested yet. | Click **run a test to map output variables from this action**, or **Test** the step. [Read a step's output](/automations/workflows/variables#read-a-steps-output) |
| An email contains raw text in curly braces | A whole object was inserted into text. | Pick a single field inside it. [Variables](/automations/workflows/variables#how-variables-are-written) |
| Every row has identical data from one step | The step's output is **pinned**, and pinned output is used in live runs too. | Step **⋯** → **Unpin output**. [Pin output](/automations/workflows/test-and-run#pin-output) |
| The Router fails instead of using the fallback | A condition checks a value that doesn't exist. | Add **Exists** or **Is not empty** first. [Router](/automations/workflows/logic#router) |
| The Router takes the wrong branch | Text is case-sensitive; only the first match runs; an empty flow matches everything. | [Router](/automations/workflows/logic#router) |
| Everything after one failure is **Skipped** | **Stop flow if node fails** is on (default). | Use **Continue run on error** on that step. [When a step fails](/automations/workflows/logic#when-a-step-fails) |
| A Delay ended early ("Skipped due to lead replied to msg") | The lead replied, so the follow-up stopped. By design. | Nothing to fix. [Delay](/automations/workflows/logic#delay) |
| "Arrays are not supported for this field" | A one-value field got a list. | **Wrap in For Each**, or use `[0]`. [For each](/automations/workflows/logic#for-each) |
| "Only array variables can be used as an iterator" | **Iterate Over** needs a list. | Pick a list variable. [For each](/automations/workflows/logic#for-each) |
| `WORKSPACE_ENV_MISSING` | A step uses an environment variable that doesn't exist. | Add it in **Settings** → **Environment**. [Environment variables](/developers/environment-variables) |
| "This approval has expired…" | Nobody decided within 3 days, so it counted as rejected. | Run the row again. [Require approval](/automations/workflows/logic#require-approval) |
| A card says "This step isn't available — click to see details" | The action was removed from Connie. | Replace the step. |
| `Can't run — "…" has an invalid Email. Fix the value or use a {{variable}}.` | A field has a value in the wrong format. | Fix it, or insert a variable. |

## Testing

| Symptom or message | Why | Fix |
| - | - | - |
| A test sent a real email or message, or spent credits | **Tests are real.** | Test with your own address or profile; pin outputs you've already tested. [Test a step](/automations/workflows/test-and-run#test-a-step) |
| **Pin output** is greyed out | No test result yet. | **Test** the step first. |
| "No test event captured yet" | Running once on an email, LinkedIn or webhook trigger needs a sample event. | Trigger → **Run Test**, send a real event. [Test a trigger](/automations/workflows/triggers#test-a-trigger) |
| "Fill in the required fields to run this test." | Earlier steps haven't produced test data. | Test earlier steps first, or type values in **Input**. |
| The test used an unexpected row | Tests use the newest record. | Pick a record with **Search a record…** in **Input**. |
| "This action could not be priced before running." | The cost can't be estimated in advance. | Continue only if you expect a charge. |

## Running, stopping and results

| Symptom or message | Why | Fix |
| - | - | - |
| Can't add or delete steps: "Draft the workflow to make changes" | The workflow is live; structure is locked. | **Live** pill → **Pause**. This cancels runs in progress. [Editing a live workflow](/automations/workflows/build#editing-a-live-workflow) |
| Pausing stopped half-finished rows | Going to draft cancels runs in progress. | Set live again; queued rows resume. [Set a workflow live](/automations/workflows/test-and-run#set-a-workflow-live) |
| "Running flow on 2 of 5 rows" | The other rows were already running. | **Stop selected rows**, then run again. |
| "The flow is already running on these rows. Stop them first if you want to rerun them." | As above. | As above. |
| "Maximum 500 rows can be run at once" | Too many rows selected. | Run in batches of 500 or fewer, or use **All rows**. |
| A re-run charged again for rows that had results | **Run only on empty cells** was off. | Turn it on. [Credits](/automations/workflows/test-and-run#credits) |
| A workflow shows **Running** for hours | A run is still going, or stuck. | **Running** menu → **Stop run** or **Stop selected rows**. [Stop a run](/automations/workflows/test-and-run#stop-a-run) |
| No Completed / Error badges on the canvas | Badges show only in the tab that started the run. | Check the **Runs** tab. |
| I didn't get a failure email | Failure alerts go to workspace owners and admins. | Check **Runs**; see [Notifications](/notifications/overview). |
| "View-only access — editing not allowed" or "You are in view-only mode" | You have view-only access. | Ask the workflow owner or an admin for **Can edit**. [Templates and sharing](/automations/templates-and-sharing) |

## Credits

| Symptom or message | Why | Fix |
| - | - | - |
| **Insufficient credits** / **Credit balance depleted** / **Negative credit balance** | Your balance is too low for this workflow. | Add credits or upgrade. [Credits](/billing/credits) |
| "Insufficient credits to run this tool. Please top up and retry." | Credits ran out mid-run. | Top up, then **Retry this row**. [Top-ups](/billing/top-ups) |
| Ran out partway through a loop although the check passed | The check counts each step once; loops charge per item. | Allow for step price × number of items. [For each](/automations/workflows/logic#for-each) |
| A Run AI agent step cost more than its badge | The "From N" badge is a minimum; AI usage and paid tools it uses are added on top. | Expected. See [Credits](/automations/workflows/test-and-run#credits). |
| "Flow is live, but stopped rows were not resumed — not enough credits for the batch." | Not enough credits to resume queued rows. | Add credits, then pause and set live again. |

## Webhooks

| Symptom or message | Fix |
| - | - |
| "Webhook is inactive. Test payload saved." | The workflow is in draft. **Set live**. |
| `400 Invalid JSON body` | Send JSON with `Content-Type: application/json`. |
| `404 Webhook not found` | Copy the **Webhook URL** again from the trigger. |
| `402` "Your credit balance is depleted…" or "Insufficient credits to run this flow…" | Add credits. |
| Duplicate requests each ran | Send an `Idempotency-Key` header. |
